VIATeC Announces 2005 Technology Award Finalists

Victoria, BC, June 3, 2005--The Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre announced the finalists for the VIATeC 2005 Technology Awards.

The twelve awards celebrate the accomplishments of BC’s fastest-growing technology region, and recognise companies, individuals and technologies demonstrating excellence, innovation and commitment to the technology community. Since their inception four years ago, the VIATeC Technology Awards have gained the reputation as the mark of distinction for outstanding leadership, innovation and technological excellence within Vancouver Island’s diverse technology community.

“We’re amazed at the innovative work accomplished by our region’s high tech sector,” says Dan Gunn, VIATeC Chief Operating Officer. “ The technology awards highlight the disproportionately-large contribution that Island companies make to the maturity of BC’s technology industry.”

Technology Company of the Year – Sponsored by Western Economic Diversification Canada
Recognises an organisation that has demonstrated excellence in innovation and a commitment to the technology sector on Vancouver Island while increasing profitability, community involvement and embracing sound business fundamentals.

This year’s finalists are: Aspreva, Forest Technology Systems, Mercurial Communications, and VMAC.

Emerging Technology Company of the Year – Sponsored by KPMG LLP
Recognises a Vancouver Island organisation that has the greatest potential to demonstrate excellence in innovation and a commitment to the technology sector while increasing profitability, community involvement and embracing sound business fundamentals.

This year’s finalists are: 6th Dimension Devices, Genologics, and Magic Kite.

Community Involvement – Sponsored by the City of Victoria
Recognises an organisation that has demonstrated its commitment to Vancouver Island communities through philanthropic support and participation.

This year’s finalists are: Dr. Nigel Livingston, PureEdge, and the Victoria Free-Net Association.

Product of the Year – Sponsored by Starfish Product Engineering
Recognises an organisation that has achieved success in the commercialization of an innovative technology product.

This year’s finalists are: Custom House, Netimage Media, Refractions Research, Reliable Controls and Synetic.

Innovative Excellence (two awards will be presented in two categories) – Sponsored by Abebooks.com and the Innovation and Development Corporation
Recognises an organisation that has researched and designed an innovative product, service or process that is expected to revolutionize a sector, method of business or way of life.

This year’s finalists are: 1 to 1 Pharmacy, How 2 Share, PureEdge, Streetlight Intelligence, Syberfix Solutions, Synetic, and Terra Remote Sensing.

Newsmaker of the Year – Sponsored by the Times-Colonist
Recognises an organisation, individual or product in the technology sector which has grabbed significant space on the attention landscape during the past year.

This year’s finalists are: Alan Brick, VCom and Abebooks.com.

Website/Online Strategy of the Year – Sponsored by Sharp’s A/V
Recognises the best website and business model and communication strategy designed by or for a Vancouver Island organisation.

This year’s finalists are: Atomic Crayon (Thrifty Foods), Falcon-Software (DICG), Reliable Controls, SPS Energy Solutions (Neat Solar Stuff) and Star Global.

The Colin Lennox Award for Technology Champion – Sponsored by Aspreva
Recognises an individual who has demonstrated passion and commitment to the Vancouver Island technology sector for at least ten years. Their long-standing support has been instrumental in Vancouver Island’s continued success on the world technology stage.

This year’s finalists are: Eric Jordan and Ian Barrodale.

In addition to the above awards, four awards will be presented in the following individual award categories:

Executive of the Year – Sponsored by Borden Ladner Gervais
Recognises an individual who has had a significant impact on the success of an organisation as a direct result of their leadership.

Award recipient: Art Aylesworth, (Carmanah Technologies).

Employee of the Year – Sponsored by Working.com
Recognises an individual in the technology sector who demonstrates outstanding initiative and service delivery, and has had a significant impact on the company for which they work.

Award recipient: Elizabeth Fox (Falcon-Software).

Technology Partnership Award
Recognises excellence through product or service collaboration which achieved a greater result than would be possible working individually.

Award recipient: Atomic Crayon and Netimage Media.

VIATeC Member of the Year – Sponsored by Carmanah Technologies
Recognises a member of VIATeC who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the technology sector through involvement, volunteering and support of VIATeC.

Award recipient: Power Measurement.
