ITMD releases first joint-venture research report in collaboration with 451 Research

IT Market Dynamics, Canada’s most widely-read IT research firm, has released the first report resulting from its collaboration with New York-based 451 Research. “Canada/U.S. IT Spending and Windows 8 Strategy Comparisons” combines ITMD analysis with data provided by 451 subsidiary ChangeWave Research.

The data included in the report is drawn from a survey conducted by ChangeWave in August, 2012. ChangeWave provided results based on responses from 1,147 U.S.-based respondents and 86 Canadian respondents, drawn from a global panel of more than 25,000 business and technology professionals.

Questions in the August survey covered two primary topics: IT spending trends and Windows 8 readiness and strategies. With the comparative data, ITMD was able to identify areas in which Canadian trends parallel – and diverge from – American spending and adoption patterns.

One area in which the two countries exhibited similarities was in their 3Q12 IT spending. In the U.S., 15% of respondents reported that actual 3Q12 spending came in over plan, with 30% stating that spending was below plan; in Canada, 14% anticipated above-plan IT expenditures, and 31% reported that IT investment was below plan. Additional historical data from ChangeWave presented in the report shows that this is actually a common response; the report notes that “below-plan spending has become the default mode for approximately 25%-30% of U.S. organizations since the recession of 2009-2010.”

The two countries do have somewhat different views on the effect that Windows 8 will have on PC acquisition patterns. One-third of Canadian respondents (vs. 20% of those from the U.S.) plan to acquire their first Windows 8 unit within six months of introduction, and 61% plan to have at least one unit deployed by year-end 2013, vs. 53% of Americans.

Key questions
  • Who is this important to? Canadian business and IT management; suppliers of PC products
  • Why is this important? Spending analysis allows companies to calibrate their own project and allocation plans vs. Canadian and U.S. norms; Windows 8 analysis helps PC-responsible management to understand the pace at which Windows 8 is likely to affect corporate deployment plans
  • Where do I go for more detail? ITMD All Points Connected research subscribers can log into IT in Canada and download the PowerPoint-format report from this site; others should contact Stephen Symonds at stephen.symonds@itincanada.ca. Note: the deck is available at no charge to ChangeWave Research panelists

The “Canada/U.S. IT Spending and Windows 8 Strategy Comparisons” report is delivered as an annotated PowerPoint slide deck.
